Eugene Thompson was born in the Overtown area of
Miami, Florida. During these formative years his dream professions were
in this order; Mathematical Physics, Astronaut, and Hermit
(seriously!). As you can surmise, he was a recluse at a very early age;
in fact, his mother took him to be tested for autism, which came back
negative. He was so introverted; his parents would have to threaten him
with punishment so he would go outside to play. He was an avid reader
from an early age. Yes, he did grow up socially maladjusted.
Thompson dropped out of high
school in the tenth grade; however, went back a year later, doubling
what classes he could, so as to graduate with his class. Following
completion of high school in 1969, he enrolled in Computer Age
Institute, where he studied computer programming in C.O.B.O.L., which
he completed in nine months.
In the last month of 1969, or the
first month of 1970, Thompson received news that caused him to think
and dwell on his impending death. He had received
“greetings” from “Uncle Sam”, that is, his
notice that he had been drafted into the United States Army. This was
during the Vietnam War. After finishing military training, he was
stationed in Washington, D.C., where he started experimenting with
drugs of all kinds, literally. It was at this period where Thompson
became an addict, which continued for twenty years.
On February 4, 1990 was
Thompson’s first day of reclaiming his life. He enrolled in Woods
House, a drug treatment program. He finished the program and enrolled
at Miami Dade Community College South campus. Thompson’s first
semester, ended with him on academic probation because of a GPA of 1.0.
He felt like quitting but thankfully he didn’t. Changed his major
several times, finally settling on mathematics. Thompson started
working for the Disabled Student Center, where he tutored the learning
disabled in mathematics for about five years.
In approximately 1993, he
encountered a young lady who needed his help. Someone, with whom he had
no aspirations for, besides, she already had become engaged, so it was
strictly a platonic relationship. Being an emotional recluse he had no
way to “fully voice” all and everything. He was
experiencing the joy of having found someone, and the dread of
violating someone else’s relationship. Well, as usual, to heck
with the torpedoes and full speed ahead.
He began to write her sonnets that were very personalized. Eventually,
under the leading of the Holy Spirit he started to generalize
everything he wrote. Which he then used as a ministering tool, helping
to heal that which he tore up! He discovered the power of words
beyond the rhyme, freestyle and meters of poetry. His new book
entitled: Murmurings Of One Under The Inspiration Of Love is a powerful
display of free expression from a man to a woman. His collection, with
its twists and turns, points to the incredible love of the Heavenly
Father.
Thompson found his soul mate, Mary, whom he refers to as “my
love, my life, my friend”. Eugene and Mary Thompson reside in
Miami, Florida. They are the founders of The New Jerusalem Prayer
Ministries International; the Co-Pastors of Fellowship of Holiness
Center; and co-founders of several business enterprises.
